Your Perfect Texas Getaway Starts Here (And Ends with a Glass of Wine)
There’s something magical about the stretch of East Texas Piney Woods surrounding West Sandy Creek Winery. Tucked next to the Sam Houston National Forest near Richards, Texas, we’re not just a place to sip great wine, we’re a basecamp for a perfect Texas getaway to one of the most beautiful corners of the Lone Star State.
Whether you’re planning a full weekend escape or a leisurely day trip from Houston, here’s a look at some of our favorite nearby spots to explore before you settle in on our patio with a glass in hand.
Huntsville State Park
Just a short drive away, Huntsville State Park is a gem of the East Texas Piney Woods, and one of the best family-friendly outdoor destinations in the region. Wrapped around the peaceful 210-acre Lake Raven, the park offers something for everyone in the family.
Spend your morning paddling a kayak (rentals are available near Raven Lodge), fishing for bass and crappie from one of the fishing piers or cooling off in the designated swim area. For the little ones, the park has playgrounds, a Nature Center with interactive exhibits, and a Junior Ranger program where kids can borrow an Explorer Pack and earn a special badge. With over 21 miles of trails winding through fragrant pines and along the lakeshore, there’s plenty of ground to cover before you need a rest.
Pro tip: The park can fill up on pretty weekends, so reservations for day use or camping are highly recommended.
Sam Houston National Forest
You can’t miss it: the Sam Houston National Forest practically wraps around our back porch. Spanning over 163,000 acres across three counties, this stunning stretch of wilderness is one of four national forests in Texas, and it’s right in your backyard when you visit us.
For hikers, the crown jewel is the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a 129-mile National Recreation Trail that winds through the entire forest. You don’t have to tackle all 129 miles; the trail has multiple entry points and loop options perfect for a morning hike before your wine tasting. The Big Creek Scenic Area in the eastern portion of the forest is especially beautiful, with gentle streams and springtime wildflowers lining the path.
The forest is also home to more than 200 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for Bald Eagles in winter and the rare red-cockaded woodpecker nesting in the pines.
Lake Conroe
About 22,000 acres of sparkling blue water sit just to the southwest of West Sandy Creek Winery. Lake Conroe is one of the most popular lakes in Texas, and for good reason. Whether you’re into boating, fishing, or just soaking up the sun on the water, it’s a wonderful add-on to your trip. The lake has multiple access points from the Sam Houston National Forest and offers year-round recreation.
It’s a great option if the kids need to burn some energy before (or after!) a quiet afternoon at the winery.
Double Lake Recreation Area
Nestled in the eastern side of the Sam Houston National Forest, Double Lake is one of those hidden spots that feels like a well-kept secret. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, this charming recreation area sits along a 24-acre lake surrounded by whispering pines and hardwoods. Families love it for swimming, picnicking, and camping under the stars.
In late February and early March, the redbud and dogwood trees burst into bloom along the trails, a spectacular show that’s worth timing your visit around.
Make a Weekend of It
The best part? You don’t have to choose just one adventure. Spend the morning on the trails, let the kids splash around at the lake in the afternoon, and end your day right here at West Sandy Creek Winery, watching the sun dip behind the pines from our patio, a glass of award-winning Texas wine in hand.
We have cozy cabin rentals on the property, so you can make a whole weekend of it without ever having to drive far. The Piney Woods are waiting, and so are we. Click here to reserve one of our cabins on Airbnb.
