Red Sangria vs. White Sangria: A Tale of Two Refreshing Classics

October 31, 2025

At West Sandy Creek Winery, we know that few drinks capture the spirit of celebration quite like sangria. Whether you’re lounging on a summer afternoon or hosting friends for dinner, this Spanish-inspired punch transforms our wines into something truly special. But the question remains: should you reach for a red or white?

Red Sangria: The Traditional Favorite

Red sangria is the original, the classic that started it all. Built on a foundation of bold red wine, it’s a fruity concoction that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. The deep ruby color is enhanced with chunks of oranges, lemons, and cinnamon sticks, creating a visual feast in your pitcher.

The flavor profile is robust and fruit-forward, with the red wine’s tannins providing structure while the citrus and fruit add brightness. The cinnamon gives it an extra kick, while a bit of orange juice and sweetener round everything out. Red sangria pairs beautifully with grilled meats, tapas, and hearty dishes—making it perfect for your next barbecue or gathering.

Make our red Sangria at home with the recipe below.

Red Sangria

1 bottle 2015 Texas Lenoir Blush

1 tbsp sugar, or to taste

3/8 cup orange juice

3 slices each- orange, lemon, lime

1/2 cinnamon stick

White Sangria: The Lighter Alternative

White sangria offers a lighter, more delicate experience. Made with white wines, it’s the perfect choice for those who find red sangria too heavy. The pale golden hue welcomes lighter fruits—think peaches, pineapple, and mango—along with lemon and orange slices and strawberries.

This version tends to be more refreshing and bright, with a lively acidity that makes it incredibly drinkable on hot days. It’s ideal alongside seafood, salads, and lighter fare, though it’s just as happy being sipped on its own by the glass. Our recipe is below.

White Sangria

1 bottle 2015 Texas Blanc du Bois Sweet

5/8 cup orange juice

3 slices each- lemon and orange

1/2 cup frozen peaches/ pineapple/ fruit mix

2 frozen strawberries

Crafting Your Perfect Sangria

At West Sandy Creek Winery, we’re passionate about helping you create memorable experiences with our wines. Whether you choose our Texas Lenoir Blush or the Texas Blanc du Bois Sweet, as your sangria base, you’re starting with quality Texas wines that bring local character to this beloved classic. You can  always experiment with other WSCW wines and added flavors. However you make it, it’s refreshing and delicious when served over ice!

So Which Should You Choose?

The truth is, you don’t have to choose. Red sangria brings boldness and tradition, while white sangria offers lightness and versatility. The best sangria is the one that matches your mood, your meal, and your moment. Why not make both and let your guests decide? After all, the best part about sangria isn’t just the taste—it’s the way it brings people together.
